Date: March 22, 2023
Event Type: Training
Format: Face-to-face
Topic: Computational Biology
Overview: Evolutionary conservation is an important metric in assessing the functional importance of amino acids in proteins. However, calculating evolutionary conservation in a proper way is a challenge. This skill requires knowledge of databases, tools, and particular knowledge in the genomics domain. In this workshop, I will teach the basics of homology and phylogenetics. I will also show a pipeline of evolutionary conservation starting from a single sequence to overall conservation measurement for an amino acid of interest.
Agenda: The workshop will consist of three sections: (i) homology, (ii) phylogenetics, and (iii) hands-on conservation analysis. See the timetable section.
Level: Intermediate (some theoretical background or practical knowledge)
Advanced (who are able to work independently but require guidance for solving complex problems)
Language: English
Duration: 6 Hours
Target Audience: Academia
Prerequisite(s): Familiarity with the unix environment
General understanding of genetics
Tools, libraries, frameworks used: TBA
Learning Objectives: By participating in this course, you will learn: Important concepts of evolutionary conservation and phylogenetics, Applications of phylogenetic tools
About the instructor: Dr. Adebali received his Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey. He got his Ph.D. in Genome Sciences in 2015 from the University of Tennessee. He worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of North Carolina as a postdoc. Since 2018, he has been an assistant professor at Sabanci University and leads his computational biology research group.
